Tommy's War: July, 1914

Tom East's Tommy's War: July 1914. Changing history?

Was WWI, the event that made the Twentieth Century 'The Century of Wars' really unstoppable?

Or could it have been stopped by a small intervention into an historical event from Tommy Green, a disillisioned craftsman in what was then the semi-rural village of Greenford, Middlesex?

No, the crucial event didn't take place in Sarajevo, Bosnia on 28th June, 1914, but in Paris just over a month later.

What unfolded over the month of July, 1914 is told here. Click the links below to find out more about it. The last is about historical and other factors which shaped and is still shaping our fates. An eclectic selection of war poetry  is included.

There are some additions to this section of the site that may be of interest to those who want to know about the real people in the book (like Charlie Chaplin who had a generally unknown connection with the area) and those who know Greenford, now in the London Borough of Ealing.
