Lyrics by Tom East; original music and singing by Jim Bartlett, accompanied by John Davies

Sandcastles - Jim Bartlett
00:00 / 00:00

       When I were a young 'un I'd play with the sand,
       I loved it to trickle down right through me 'and.
            Sand! Sand! Sand all of the day,
            sand in me hair and sand where I lay.
                [Chorus]

       Me mother she'd curse all the sand everywhere;
       the sand in me clothing and the sand in me hair,
            the sand in our butties and the sand in our drink -
            I didn't know then what it was I should think.

       Built castles all day all alone on the shore,
       till tide come and swamped 'em and then they were no more.

            I picked up me shovel, built 'em over again,
            sure ain't no wonder me spirit went on the wane.

       I got me a baby and married a wife;
       I signed for a soldier, went to live a man's life
            for football and running were important to me,
            until they sent me abroad to serve me country.

       Me sergeant, he'd curse all the sand everywhere,
       the sand in our clothing and the sand in our hair,
            the sand in our rifles and the sand in our drink -
            I didn't know then what it was I should think.

       We came to build freedom, respect for our law,
       till tide come and swamped 'em and then they were no more.

            We picked up our rifles, built 'em over again,
            sure ain't no wonder our spirit went on the wane.
